This volume presents a collection of essays whose topics are at the core of the current academic and public debate. Massmigration, exile chosen or forced upon by war or economic constraints, that is, the global circulation of goods and information, the appropriation and commodification of national cultures, religion, folklore and traditional values have led to cultural fusions as well as confusions that need to be revaluated. Major critical voices, among others those of Margaret Bridges, Elisabeth Bronfen, Monika Fludernik, Hartwig Isernhagen, and Teresa de Lauretis, explore and question the assets and liabilities of the term hybridity in view of current concepts of ethnicity, gender and ethics in visual and literary texts. The result is a decisive discourse on hybridity and the hybridization of cultural processes, as it envisions both European and global perspectives. Authors treated include Frantz Fanon, Rudyard Kipling, Bharati Mukherjee, Marge Piercy, Douglas Sirk, Sara Suleri, and Art Spiegelman.
