A collection of scholarly essays discuss Hans Magnus Enzensberger's two recent essays, "Die große Wanderung" (1992) and "Aussichten auf den Bürgerkrieg" (1993). The topical and important works by one of Germany's most well known writers, both provocative and persuasive, are analysed in view of Enzensberger's `intellectual journey' since the 1960s, with regard to the current debate on violence and war (with specific references to the `civil war' in former Yugoslavia), and in the context of the international discourse on migration, identity, multiculturalism and racism. Contributors include literary scholars, sociologists and historians from Germany, Poland, the U.S. and Australia. The international scope of the volume and ist interdisciplinary perspectives make this topical publication an important contribution to research in contemporary German literature. Sixteen chapters, all previously unpublished, with an introduction by David Roberts.
